Since 1800, Washington D.C. has been the seat of the federal government for the United States. It is a major metropolitan region that grew rapidly in the twentieth century due to an increase in national government responsibilities both domestically and throughout the world. As of the year 2005 the population of Washington D.C. was over five hundred thousand.
Washington D.C. is located where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers meet. The north, east and southwest sides of the city are flanked by the state of Maryland and on the southwest by the state of Virginia. The city has a cosmopolitan character as well as a diverse social and economic makeup. In the summer the climate is hot and humid with cold and damp weather in the winter. In January the average daily temperature ranges from twenty-seven to forty-two degrees and in July temperatures range between seventy-one and eighty-nine degrees. On average the city gets thirty-nine inches of precipitation each year.
